WAFCON 2024: Madugu Says Super Falcons’ 3-0 Win Just the Beginning
Despite a dominant 3-0 victory over Tunisia in their opening match of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has urged caution, stating that his team has much more to offer.
Nigeria kicked off their campaign in style on Sunday in Casablanca, with goals from Asisat Oshoala and Rinsola Babajide in the first half, and a second-half strike by Chinwendu Ihezuo, securing all three points and putting the nine-time champions at the top of Group B.
While Algeria also earned a win—beating Botswana 1-0—they sit just behind the Falcons on goal difference. Madugu, however, remains focused on the bigger picture. “It’s a promising start, but we’re far from our peak,” he said. “The real test lies ahead.”
Following the Super Falcons’ commanding 3-0 win over Tunisia, head coach Justine Madugu has reminded fans and players alike that the team is still evolving and far from its best.
Speaking after the match, Madugu played down the scoreline, noting that while the result was positive, there’s still plenty of work to be done. “We’re not carried away by the result. We had clear objectives going into the game and, after reviewing our performance, we’ve identified key areas that need sharpening,” he said.
He added, “It’s just the first match. It’s rare for any team to hit top form right from the start. What matters most is that we improve with each game and reach our peak when it counts.”
Madugu Backs Entire Squad, Emphasizes Unity and Meritocracy
As he guides Nigeria through his first major tournament at the helm, Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has reaffirmed his belief in every member of the squad, stressing that team unity and individual contribution are at the heart of his coaching philosophy.
“Everyone in this team matters,” Madugu said, responding to questions about his player selection. “We’ve built a culture where every player knows they have a role. No individual is above the team. We value commitment and performance — those who deliver will stay in, but we’re also ready to make changes if it helps us grow.”
Acknowledging the legacy of the Super Falcons as Africa’s most decorated women’s football side, Madugu admitted the job comes with pressure — but also immense pride. “It’s a huge responsibility, but also a great honour to lead a team with such history and expectation,” he said.
Madugu Grateful for National Call, Vows Full Commitment to Super Falcons Mission
Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has expressed deep appreciation for the chance to lead Nigeria’s women’s national team, acknowledging both the challenge and the honor that come with the role.
“Representing my country in this capacity is an incredible honor,” Madugu said. “It’s a massive responsibility managing a team as legendary as the Super Falcons, but I’m truly thankful and completely dedicated to this journey.”
With nine WAFCON titles already in the trophy cabinet and a semi-final streak that stretches back to 1998, the Super Falcons are eyeing a landmark 10th crown. And under Madugu’s leadership, the team looks ready to continue its legacy of dominance on the continental stage.
