Trump Blasts Musk’s New Political Party as “Ridiculous”
U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday harshly criticized Elon Musk’s decision to launch a new political party, calling the move “ridiculous” and escalating tensions between the two former allies.
Trump, a leading figure in the Republican Party, described the SpaceX and Tesla CEO as a “train wreck” who had gone “off the rails,” following Musk’s recent comments about his desire to challenge the current U.S. political establishment. The rift highlights a growing divide between the former president and one of his once-prominent supporters.
Former Allies Turned Rivals: Musk and Trump’s Fallout Deepens
Once closely aligned, the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, served prominently alongside President Trump as the head of the so-called “Department of Government Efficiency,” spearheading cost-cutting initiatives. However, their relationship soured significantly following sharp disagreements over Trump’s expansive tax and spending package, often touted by the president as his “big beautiful” mega-bill.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticized Elon Musk’s recent declaration to form a new political party, calling the move “ridiculous” and a potential source of unnecessary division within the American political landscape.
Speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One at his New Jersey golf club on Sunday, Trump said, “It’s always been a two-party system, and I think starting a third party just adds to confusion. Third parties have never worked. So he can have fun with it, but I think it’s ridiculous.”
The remarks come just a day after Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur behind Tesla, SpaceX, and X (formerly Twitter), announced plans to launch the “America Party,” vowing to challenge what he described as the United States’ entrenched “one-party system.”
A vocal critic of President Biden’s expansive domestic spending agenda, Musk warned that the current fiscal direction could balloon national debt, and pledged to oppose any lawmakers who supported the package.
Notably, Musk — who previously chaired the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency under Trump — accused both Republicans and Democrats of enabling financial mismanagement. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk posted on X.
While details of the new party remain sparse and no formal registration has been confirmed with U.S. electoral authorities, political analysts say Musk’s move could complicate Republican prospects in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections and potentially reshape the national political conversation.
‘Saddened’ Trump Doubles Down on Musk Criticism Mid-Flight
In a reflection of how seriously he views the matter, former U.S. President Donald Trump continued his sharp rebuke of Elon Musk while en route to Washington, posting on his Truth Social platform directly from Air Force One.
Describing himself as “saddened” by Musk’s decision to form a third party, Trump intensified his criticism of the billionaire entrepreneur, underscoring the growing rift between the two once-close allies.
Trump Blasts Musk’s Third Party Plans, Labels Him a ‘Train Wreck’
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of Elon Musk, describing the billionaire’s recent political moves as erratic and damaging. Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump said, “I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks.”
He warned that third parties only fuel “Complete and Total DISRUPTION & CHAOS,” adding, “we have enough of that with the Radical Left Democrats.”
Trump reiterated his claim that Musk’s fallout with him stems from Tesla’s interests, alleging that Musk turned against him after the administration’s spending bill reduced subsidies for electric vehicles. Musk, however, has maintained that his opposition to the bill is based on concerns over rising fiscal deficits and ballooning national debt.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent weighed in on Elon Musk’s foray into politics on Sunday, subtly criticizing the tech mogul’s decision to launch a third political party. In an interview with CNN, Bessent suggested Musk would be better off concentrating on his business ventures.
“I believe that the boards of directors at his various companies wanted him to come back and run those companies, which he is better at than anyone,” Bessent said. “So I imagine that those board of directors did not like this announcement yesterday and will be encouraging him to focus on his business activities, not his political activities.”
Musk, who stepped down from his role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in May, cited a desire to return full-time to his corporate responsibilities. His exit came amid reports of declining Tesla sales and reputational setbacks linked to his close affiliation with the Trump administration.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk once shared a high-profile alliance, marked by a grand farewell ceremony in the Oval Office. During the unusual event, Musk — sporting a visible black eye — was presented with a symbolic golden key to the White House, a gesture that underscored his influence within the administration.
However, the relationship quickly soured. Within days, both men were publicly trading barbs on social media after Musk criticized Trump’s major domestic spending legislation. The fallout signaled a dramatic shift in their once-close partnership.
When asked on Sunday whether he would request the return of the golden key, Trump declined to comment.
