Tinubu: Nigerians Have No Reason to Be Poor, Pledges Stronger Support for MSMEs
President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his belief that Nigerians should not live in poverty, stressing his administration’s determination to boost the growth of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) nationwide.
Speaking at the 8th Expanded National MSME Clinic in Calabar on Wednesday — through Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented him — Tinubu noted that Nigeria is blessed with abundant human and natural resources waiting to be fully harnessed.
Highlighting Cross River’s fertile land and agricultural potential, he said the state has the capacity to grow nearly every crop.
“The Federal Government intends to plant 100 million oil palm trees, more than any other state. Cross River has an advantage,” he stated.
Tinubu recalled that since taking office, his government has worked to guarantee access to capital for small businesses, while also supporting ventures that can redefine the future of work, skills, and industry. He commended the Cross River State Government for establishing a modern communication and technology hub for MSMEs, aligning the state with global digital trends.
According to him, the hub will provide entrepreneurs with high-speed internet, advanced equipment, and collaborative spaces — enabling innovation from local traders to furniture makers and fashion designers across the state.
“This is why my administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda is a commitment to creating an environment where MSMEs not only survive but thrive. Our commitment is not just to give loans or grants, but to build an ecosystem that provides infrastructure and enhances creativity,” Tinubu added.
Governor Bassey Otu, in his remarks, described the MSME Clinic as a special collaboration between Cross River and the Federal Government aimed at nurturing entrepreneurship and boosting the state’s economy.
He revealed that through the state’s Micro Finance and Enterprise Development Agency, over 3,500 entrepreneurs have been trained in various aspects of business. Otu stressed that the potential of MSMEs is immense and can significantly improve living standards if fully tapped.
Also speaking, Mr. Pius Neji, Head of the Bank of Industry (BOI) in Cross River, affirmed the bank’s role as a strong partner to local entrepreneurs. He disclosed that about ₦260 million has already been disbursed to MSMEs in the state, noting that Cross River’s resources and drive could help propel Nigeria toward greater industrial growth.
