The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos State has clarified why prominent political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi, were asked to formally register at the ward level.

ADC Lagos State Chairman, George Ashiru, explained on Friday that the party is entering a new phase, requiring coalition leaders to become official members in their respective wards.

Following a closed-door stakeholders’ meeting, the ADC had directed its chieftains to resign from their previous parties and complete registration with the party. Some opposition figures who left their parties have yet to formally join the ADC, while others linked to the party have not resigned from their former affiliations.

Speaking on News Central’s “The 12 Report”, Ashiru said the coalition initially brought together various political stakeholders who adopted the ADC as a credible platform. He added that the next phase involves formalizing membership:

“Now it’s time for all the political bigwigs to identify directly in their various wards and states, rather than just being coalition leaders. They need to become actual members of the party in a formal sense,” he said.

Ashiru described this step as a natural progression from coalition discussions and mobilizations to the formal registration process. He also emphasized that the focus is on high-profile political figures with strong public recognition.

“Some people will say, ‘I’m coming in six months’ or ‘I’m coming in three months,’ but we’re prioritizing the big names—the ones with popular recognition,” Ashiru added.
