ems Says Women Face Lack of Respect in Nigerian Music Industry

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has said that women are not given adequate respect in the country’s music industry.

In a recent interview with the BBC, Tems revealed that early in her career, she struggled to be taken seriously because of her gender.

“People don’t really respect women in the [music] industry,” she said.

The Love Me Jeje hitmaker explained that she hopes to change how women perceive themselves in music through her new platform, The Leading Vibe Initiative, which aims to provide female artists with greater access to opportunities, audiences, and success.

She encouraged aspiring female musicians to define their personal and professional boundaries early on: “Have an idea of what you want for yourself, your brand, and your limits—what are the things you wouldn’t do for fame and the things you would?”

Tems’ comments echo those of other prominent Nigerian artists, including Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade, who have previously spoken about the gender-based challenges women face in the industry.
