Former Sokoto State Governor and current Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Tambuwal, has admitted that his administration once engaged bandits through unofficial channels as part of efforts to address insecurity in the state.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Tambuwal explained that banditry in Nigeria cannot be seen as a purely local problem, stressing that both foreign and domestic actors are involved.

“We did engage bandits through backdoor channels,” Tambuwal said, while tracing the roots of insecurity in the region to decades of instability across the Sahel.

According to him, the collapse of Libya and crises in neighboring countries fueled an influx of arms into Nigeria as far back as the 1980s, a situation compounded by poorly secured borders.

He added that, unlike Boko Haram which operates with a defined ideology and command structure, bandit groups are fragmented, profit-driven, and even turn on one another.

“This is not just ideology, it’s criminality — it’s business to them, and they are making money out of it,” he said.
