PENGASSAN Halts Strike as Dangote Recalls Sacked Workers

The tension in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector has eased after the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) reached an agreement to suspend its two-day strike action against Dangote Refinery.

The breakthrough came following a series of meetings held on Monday and Tuesday between the Federal Government, PENGASSAN, and Dangote Refinery.

As part of the resolution, the refinery agreed to recall workers dismissed for joining the union, while PENGASSAN confirmed it would begin the process of suspending its strike.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, who chaired the sessions, stressed the need to uphold the rights of workers under Nigerian law.

“The right of workers to unionise in accordance with Nigerian law must be respected,” Dingyadi said.

A communique issued after the meeting outlined three major resolutions:

  1. Reabsorption of Workers – Dangote Group will immediately start reintegrating the disengaged staff into other companies within the conglomerate, without loss of pay.
  2. No Victimisation – Both parties agreed that no employee would face reprisals for their role in the industrial dispute.
  3. Suspension of Strike – PENGASSAN pledged to commence the process of fully calling off the strike.

The union had on Sunday announced the strike, cutting off gas and crude supply to the refinery in protest of the dismissal of workers who voluntarily joined its ranks.

With the new agreement in place, operations at Dangote Refinery are expected to stabilise as both sides work towards long-term industrial harmony.
