The standoff between the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Dangote Group has deepened, with the union accusing the company of disguising anti-competitive tactics as benevolence.

In a statement on Friday, NUPENG’s National President, Williams Akporeha, alleged that Dangote’s recently launched free premium motor spirit (PMS) distribution initiative was nothing more than a “Greek gift.”

This comes after Dangote Group announced a new retail and ex-depot price template on Monday, September 15, and commenced its fuel distribution scheme on Thursday, which led to a drop in petrol prices across several locations.

However, NUPENG warned Nigerians not to be deceived, insisting the initiative was designed to weaken the union and its members.

“Nigerians should not be deceived by the offer of free nationwide delivery of petroleum products to dispensing stations. It is a Greek gift to ensure that other employers of petroleum truck drivers are unable to employ drivers. Only those employed by Dangote and compelled to join the DTCDA will remain in work. Everything is targeted at crushing NUPENG and its PTD branch,” the union said.

NUPENG had earlier threatened to embark on a fresh strike, accusing Dangote Refinery of reneging on its resolutions with the union.
