Minister Idris Says Nigeria Still Safe Despite Attacks

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has maintained that Nigeria remains a safe country, despite ongoing security challenges in parts of the nation.

Speaking in an interview with CNN, Idris dismissed allegations of genocidal attacks against Christians in Nigeria, describing such claims as “misrepresentations based on faulty data.”

According to the minister, while there have been incidents of attacks affecting Christians, Muslims have also been victims of violence, and it would be misleading to portray the country as one that suppresses religious freedom.

“Nigeria is not that bad. Yes, we have seen attacks on some Christians; we have also seen attacks on Muslims as well. But it’s wrong to characterize Nigeria as a country that does not tolerate religious freedom,” Idris said.

He further emphasized that insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in the Northeast, has significantly improved compared to previous years.

“Once upon a time, some of the territories in the Northeast were taken over by Boko Haram, but that is no longer the case. They were holding about 14 local governments at a time, but that is no longer the case,” he stated.

The minister noted that travel across the country has become safer, attributing the improvement to ongoing efforts by the federal government to protect lives and property.

“Traveling around the country was a problem at some point, but that is no longer the case. The government of Nigeria is working hard to ensure the protection of lives and property and to ensure that people go about their businesses,” Idris added.

He concluded by describing some of the concerns expressed by foreign officials about Nigeria’s security and religious tolerance as exaggerated and based on outdated information.
