The Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) has unveiled plans to generate ₦15 billion in monthly revenue by 2026, leveraging a new tax structure designed to promote fairness, efficiency, and transparency.

The Executive Director of Compliance and Enforcement at KIRS, Alhaji Muhammed Abba Aliyu, announced the target during a multi-sector stakeholders’ engagement held in collaboration with the Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PACE) in Kano.

According to him, the new framework focuses on taxing individuals earning above ₦800,000 annually, shielding lower-income earners from undue financial pressure.

“The projection is anchored on a new tax framework that prioritises fairness and efficiency,” he stated.

Aliyu explained that revenue will be derived primarily from income tax on employment and business activities, service charges for public amenities, and penalties for legal infractions. He noted that this approach is aimed at streamlining revenue collection while strengthening the social contract between citizens and the state.

PACE representative Alhassan Usman highlighted the importance of digital tax systems, urging residents to move away from cash transactions with revenue officers and embrace secure, traceable digital payments. He added that beyond revenue generation, the campaign aims to educate citizens on the long-term benefits of tax compliance, noting that accurate records will help entrepreneurs track their finances and seize growth opportunities.

The development comes as Kano doubled its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), rising from ₦37.38 billion in 2023 to ₦74.77 billion in 2024, making it one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing revenue states, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s Special Adviser on Information, Ibrahim Adam, attributed the milestone to blocking revenue leakages and restructuring KIRS. He added that the governor appointed top professionals to lead revenue generation, which positioned Kano at the top of the IGR chart in 2024.

Adam noted that Governor Yusuf remains grateful for the public’s cooperation and pledged to sustain the momentum in driving the state’s economic growth.
