Kano SDP Secretary Resigns Over Leadership Crisis

The State Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kano, Hussaini Isa Mairiga, has tendered his resignation from the party, citing a breakdown of internal democracy and growing disillusionment with Nigeria’s political climate.

In a resignation letter dated October 19, 2025, addressed to the SDP National Chairman, Mairiga said he could no longer remain in a political structure where “democracy has degenerated into a system driven by personal enrichment and political patronage rather than genuine service to the people.”

He lamented what he described as the deepening crisis within opposition parties, noting that external influences had worsened internal divisions and crippled their effectiveness.

“The SDP has become entangled in a severe leadership crisis, with conflicting factions each claiming legitimacy. This has eroded public confidence and rendered the party incapable of functioning as a credible alternative to the ruling party,” he wrote.

Mairiga further stated that the situation within the SDP reflects a broader national problem, where opposition parties are deliberately weakened by vested interests rather than being supported to provide meaningful governance alternatives.

“What we see today is a troubling trend where political institutions, instead of representing citizens’ interests, have become tools for personal and financial gain. This is not the democracy we fought for,” he added.

Mairiga’s resignation underscores growing concerns about the state of opposition politics in Nigeria, particularly the erosion of internal discipline and the increasing influence of money and power struggles over ideology and service.
