Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has once again faulted President Bola Tinubu’s decision to scrap fuel subsidies, insisting that no nation in the world operates without subsidies.

Speaking during an interview on Sunday Politics on Channels Television, Falana argued that the policy was misguided and largely influenced by international financial institutions.

“There’s no way you can completely remove subsidies. No country on earth has done that,” he said. “Even advanced economies like the United States, the United Kingdom, and France subsidise key sectors such as electricity, agriculture, and other areas critical to citizens’ welfare.”

He further alleged that the push to eliminate subsidies in Nigeria was not a homegrown decision but one driven by external pressure. “It was the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund that insisted the government must remove all subsidies,” Falana stated.
