Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has raised concerns over the rising cost of fuel in Nigeria, noting that products supplied by the Dangote refinery are reportedly cheaper in neighboring Togo than in Nigeria.

Falana made the remark on Sunday during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, while reacting to the government’s plan to introduce a 5 percent fuel surcharge.

He warned that the policy could amount to double taxation and further worsen the financial strain on Nigerians.

“In addition to VAT already being paid on fuel, the government now wants to add another 5 percent charge. That’s what people are complaining about,” Falana said. “From the reports we’ve seen, Dangote fuel exported from Nigeria is selling at about ₦65 less in Togo than it does here at home.”

The rights activist urged the federal government to revisit the proposal and ensure that citizens are not subjected to more hardship.
