Enugu APC Congratulates LP’s Bright Ngene on Bye-Election Victory, Vows Support Amid Legal Troubles

The Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has congratulated Bright Ngene, the Labour Party (LP) candidate who emerged winner of the Enugu South 1 Constituency bye-election, despite currently serving a prison sentence.

In a statement signed by its chairman, Barr. Ugochukwu Agballah, and shared with journalists in Enugu over the weekend, the APC praised the outcome of the polls while commending the role played by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, whose presence during the rerun helped deter attempts at manipulation.

The party also expressed appreciation to Sen. Kelvin Chukwu (LP, Enugu East), Hon. Chimobi Atu (APC, Enugu North–Enugu South Federal Constituency), Hon. Paul Nnamchi (APC, Enugu East–Isuizo Federal Constituency), as well as executive members of both APC and LP at the state and local levels, for resisting political pressure and safeguarding the will of the people.

INEC, through its National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Sam Olumekun, confirmed Ngene’s return after the rerun ordered by the Appeal Court. He noted that despite earlier disruptions in some polling units, the exercise was concluded successfully, with Ngene declared winner.

APC chairman Agballah, while congratulating Ngene, described the victory as proof that Enugu people would no longer tolerate electoral manipulation. He recalled his own experiences with alleged rigging in past elections and urged political stakeholders to continue defending the people’s mandate, irrespective of party lines.

Agballah further assured Ngene that APC would stand by him not only in protecting his mandate but also in pursuing his legal battle to secure freedom, so he can finally assume the Assembly seat that has been vacant for more than two years.

He also appealed to the defeated PDP candidate, Mr. Sam Ngene, to accept the outcome in good faith, describing it as an act of statesmanship.

Recall that Bright Ngene was recently sentenced to seven years in prison by an Enugu South Magistrates’ Court over alleged mismanagement of community development funds — a ruling many observers believe is politically motivated and linked to the legislative seat.
