The Ebonyi State Government has launched an investigation into the recent collapse of a mining pit at Ihietutu, Ishiagu, in Ivo Local Government Area of the state.

The State Commissioner for Solid Minerals, Chidi Onyia, made this known during a fact-finding visit to the site alongside federal mines officers and security operatives.

The tragic incident, which occurred last Friday, claimed the lives of two people and left three others injured.

While some reports suggested negligence by the operating company, Greenfield Metals Ltd., the commissioner said early findings point to a natural occurrence rather than corporate recklessness.

“Mining, like many industries, carries inherent risks. From our preliminary review, this incident appears to be a natural disaster, not negligence,” Onyia explained. “However, investigations are ongoing involving the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals, the Police, DSS, and NSCDC. If we uncover evidence of recklessness, we will take decisive action.”

Onyia also dismissed claims that the site had been ceded to illegal miners, stressing that Ebonyi State does not tolerate unlicensed mining activities and continues to uphold all permits issued by the Federal Government. He extended condolences to the families of the victims and urged the public to avoid spreading unverified claims that could deepen their grief.

Community leaders, meanwhile, expressed support for the company. Prince Fabian Chukwu, Chairman of the Ihietutu Development Union’s Board of Trustees, said Greenfield Metals had contributed positively to the area.

“They have empowered many locals, constructed the road leading to this site, and consistently delivered on their obligations to the community. That is why we stand with them in this unfortunate moment,” he noted.

The company has temporarily suspended its operations at the pit pending the outcome of the ongoing investigations.
