Dangote Refinery Defends High-Sulphur Fuel Import

Published

Dangote Refinery has refuted circulating claims that it imported refined petrol (PMS) containing high sulphur levels, describing the reports as false and misleading.

The clarification came on Friday from the 650,000-barrel-per-day facility following allegations that it brought in finished fuel products with unsafe sulphur content.

In its response, the refinery explained that the shipment being referenced was not petrol, but rather an intermediate feedstock that would undergo further refining at its plant to meet both Nigerian and international quality standards.

“Dangote Petroleum Refinery has noted reports claiming it is importing finished petrol (PMS) with high sulphur content into Nigeria. These reports are false, malicious, and misleading,” the statement read.

“The cargo in question is an intermediate feedstock, not finished petrol, and will be fully refined in our units to meet Nigerian and international quality standards. Operating within a Free Trade Zone, Dangote Petroleum Refinery produces and sells only high-quality fuels that comply with all regulatory requirements.”

The company added that its products are exported to highly regulated markets such as the U.S. and Europe, which demonstrates its adherence to global standards. It also noted that all imports come with quality certificates that are shared with regulatory agencies, and these documents can be made public to ensure transparency.

It’s worth recalling that Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, had previously accused fuel marketers of importing cheap and substandard petrol into the country — a claim that was strongly denied by the marketers.
