The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Sokoto State has cautioned Nigerians against engaging in multiple voter registrations, warning that the act contravenes the Electoral Act and carries legal consequences.
The state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Umar Garba, issued the warning during his first media briefing at INEC’s state headquarters in Sokoto.

Garba explained that the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which kicked off with online pre-registration on August 18, 2025, is designed for three categories of people: new voters, those seeking transfer of registration due to relocation, and individuals replacing lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
He further disclosed that physical registration will begin on August 25, covering all 23 local government areas, the state headquarters, and other designated centres.
Registrants, he said, will be required to present valid identification such as a national ID card, international passport, driver’s license, or birth certificate to complete the process.
To strengthen credibility and curb electoral malpractice, Garba revealed that INEC will deploy the Voter Enrollment Device (VED) alongside the Automatic Biometric Identification System (ABIS) to detect and eliminate cases of multiple registrations.
