The Anglican Bishop of Ijebu-Southwest Diocese, Rt. Rev’d Babatunde Ogunbawo, has urged members of the judiciary to resist corruption and remain courageous in the face of pressure from power, wealth, and influence.

Speaking on Monday during a special service marking the start of the 2025/2026 legal year at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Ake, Abeokuta, the cleric stressed that judicial officers must uphold justice even when it is unpopular.

Drawing from Micah 6:8, Ogunbawo reminded the gathering that God requires those in authority to act justly, show mercy, and walk humbly. He emphasized that justice is not an occasional act but a daily duty, warning that a justice system without mercy becomes “bitter.”

“Be bold and ready to confront the system, stand against corruption,” he charged. “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin—corruption—brings shame. Justice without mercy can be cruel. Hold justice and be merciful, but don’t be timid.”

The bishop also noted that public trust in the judiciary remains fragile, urging officers to see their authority as a sacred trust that must not be abused, since all are ultimately accountable to God, the higher judge.

The service was attended by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Chief Judge Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, members of the state executive council, serving and retired judges, magistrates, and other judicial officers.

In his remarks, Governor Abiodun welcomed the judiciary into the new legal year, calling for renewed dedication to fairness and the protection of society’s most vulnerable. He stressed that integrity, impartiality, and courage remain the pillars of justice, while pledging his administration’s continued support for judicial reforms and efficiency.

“Justice cannot thrive without integrity, impartiality, and courage,” Abiodun said. “Our government will keep providing the necessary resources to strengthen the judiciary and safeguard the sanctity of the legal system in Ogun State.”

Also speaking, Chief Judge Mosunmola Dipeolu highlighted the importance of technology in judicial practice. She noted that nearly all judges and magistrates in the state are already computer literate, which will enable the introduction of e-filing and e-affidavit processes.

“With digital systems, cases can be assigned online anytime—weekends, evenings, or even midnight—ensuring smoother and faster service delivery,” she said.
