A three-storey building under construction collapsed Thursday morning in Awka, Anambra State, trapping several workers beneath the rubble.

The incident happened around 11:40 a.m. behind the Anambra State House of Assembly, near Ekwueme Square in Okpuno. Eyewitnesses said artisans were working on the roof when the structure suddenly gave way, sparking panic in the area.

The ill-fated building, which had four suspended floors and was at the roofing stage, reportedly collapsed without warning.

Preliminary investigations by officials from the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and the state’s materials testing department suggested that poor concrete mixing and possible foundation defects may have triggered the disaster.

Victor Meju, Chairman of COREN-ERM in Anambra, confirmed that the private structure had just been roofed a week earlier. He described the incident as a “vertically complete collapse to rubble.”

Rescue efforts were initially hampered by a lack of excavators and other essential equipment, forcing bystanders to attempt makeshift interventions to reach those trapped.

State agencies, including the Ministry of Housing and the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, have since been deployed to the site to coordinate recovery operations.
