Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu have apprehended a 62-year-old man, Bernard Odinchefu, accused of being a key informant and extortionist for a secessionist group in Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra State.

The arrest, made on October 1, 2025, targets a network reportedly imposing illegal levies on local traders and families in the Isseke and Orsumoghu communities—areas long affected by insecurity and separatist activity. According to the Anambra State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Odinchefu allegedly coordinated monthly payments starting from ₦10,000 from individual traders and sums of ₦100,000 or more from families planning burial ceremonies. These funds were reportedly directed to a “Commander” in a known terrorist camp.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, described the arrest as a decisive move to dismantle criminal structures operating under the guise of a secessionist struggle. “These elements are not freedom fighters; they are extortionists preying on the most vulnerable in our communities,” he said.

The development has sparked cautious optimism among residents and community leaders in the Isseke-Orsumoghu axis, who hope the arrest signals the beginning of an end to the crippling “pre-burial levies” and forced payments that have disrupted commerce and daily life in the area.

Security analysts note that while Odinchefu may not be the top leader of the extortion network, his role as a key financial coordinator could help unravel the broader structure. The suspect remains in custody, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend other collaborators and dismantle the financing network.

CP Orutugu reaffirmed the police commitment to safeguarding residents and warned, “Let this arrest send a clear message to those extorting and terrorizing our people under any guise: the law will catch up with you.”

Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities and support security agencies’ efforts to restore peace and lawful commerce in the region, particularly ahead of the year-end season, traditionally associated with increased community ceremonies and business activities.
