Aliero: Election Losers Buying Justice, Hurting Democracy

The Senator representing Kebbi Central, Mohammed Adamu Aliero, has raised alarm over what he described as a growing trend of election losers resorting to bribery through the court system to overturn legitimate poll results.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a retreat for the Senate and House Committees on Electoral Matters, held at the Legend Hotel, Airport Road, Lagos, Aliero said the practice represents a grave abuse of Nigeria’s democratic process.

“It has happened in the past — a situation where the loser will go to court after losing the election and then bribe his way to get himself declared as the winner,” the senator stated.

He warned that such judicial manipulation undermines public confidence in democracy and makes a mockery of the electoral process.

Aliero disclosed that lawmakers have spent over a year and a half conducting public hearings and working to strengthen the nation’s electoral laws.

“We will amend everything that needs to be amended so that there won’t be ambiguity, inconsistency, or discrepancies,” he said. “We’ve observed many loopholes in the Electoral Act 2022 and are determined to block them to ensure free, fair, and credible elections.”
