Alex Ikwechegh, the House of Representatives member for Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency, has urged President Bola Tinubu to order the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Speaking on Thursday in Umuahia at the inauguration of the Abia State Security Trust Fund, Ikwechegh noted that voices from the northern region have also begun to support the call for Kanu’s freedom.
According to the lawmaker, releasing Kanu could significantly reduce insecurity and unrest across the South-East region.
Alex Ikwechegh, the representative for Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency, highlighted ongoing efforts by the South-East Caucus in the National Assembly to secure Nnamdi Kanu’s release, emphasizing that many in the region may not fully realize how much the Enyinnaya Abaribe-led group has done behind the scenes.
“The people of the South-East often express a sense of marginalization, and for many, Nnamdi Kanu represents a powerful voice,” he stated.
Ikwechegh disclosed that the caucus has engaged with key national security stakeholders, including the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and the Security and Intelligence Committee, chaired by a colleague from Borno State. He added that even lawmakers from the North are now advocating for Kanu’s release.
He also praised Governor Alex Otti for launching the Abia State Security Trust Fund as a proactive step toward strengthening security in the state.
Additionally, Ikwechegh noted that he is working in alignment with the governor’s vision by supporting youth empowerment initiatives aimed at making Aba a safer and more secure city.
