Bashir Sets Condition for Christian-Christian Ticket

Bashir Ahmad, a former presidential media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has said he would support a Christian/Christian presidential ticket under certain conditions.

Ahmad made the remark while responding to a question from an X user on Monday.

A user identified as @Jayden_071 had queried why the former aide avoided responding to a previous question about his stance on same-faith tickets.

“But you haven’t answered where someone asked if you would accept a Christian/Christian ticket,” the user asked.

In his reply, Ahmad said his decision would depend on the political party and the quality of candidates presented.

“If the political party I belong to presents two Christians whom I believe are the best options for the country, why not?” he wrote.

Ahmad, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), added that competence and capacity should take precedence over religious considerations in leadership selection.

The discussion reignited debate on Nigeria’s same-faith ticket controversy, which first gained prominence in 2022 when the APC fielded a Muslim/Muslim ticket—pairing Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima—a move that drew widespread criticism, particularly from Christian groups.

Despite the uproar, the duo went on to win the 2023 presidential election, solidifying the debate over religion’s role in Nigerian politics.
