The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced a comprehensive mobilisation programme for its participation in the ‘Free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’ nationwide protest, scheduled to take place on October 20, 2025.

This was disclosed on Monday in a statement signed by NANS President, Atiku Isah, following a resolution reached at the association’s recent executive meeting.

According to the statement, the planned protest is part of students’ collective demand for justice, civil rights, and democratic accountability in Nigeria.

“Following the resolution reached at the recent executive meeting of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), chaired by the National President, Comrade Atiku Isah, the leadership of NANS hereby calls on all Nigerian students to participate in the ‘Free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’ nationwide protest scheduled to be held on Monday, 20th October, 2025,” the statement read.

To ensure effective coordination, NANS outlined designated zonal convergence points across the country ahead of the protest:

  • South West Zone: Ekiti State (departure for Abuja on Sunday, October 19)
  • South East Zone: Enugu
  • South-South Zone: Edo State
  • North East Zone: Bauchi State
  • North West Zone: Kano State
  • North Central Zone: Lokoja, Kogi State

The association added that ten buses will be allocated to each zone to facilitate transportation, while detailed travel plans will be communicated directly to Students’ Union Government (SUG) Presidents nationwide.

“This mobilisation is part of the collective demand for justice, civil rights, and democratic accountability. As students, we affirm that freedom is achieved through struggle, and we remain committed to peaceful advocacy for what is right,” the statement added.

The protest comes amid an ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike that has kept government-owned universities shut since Monday.

The planned action follows an earlier announcement by former presidential candidate and activist Omoyele Sowore, who declared October 20 as the date for a march to the Presidential Villa to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, following his rearrest in Kenya.
