FG: Cashew Crucial for Nigeria’s Export Goals

The Federal Government has underscored the strategic importance of cashew in achieving Nigeria’s non-oil export targets, describing the sector as too critical to be left in crisis.

Mr. Abiodun Yinusa, Special Assistant to the President on Agriculture, made the assertion in a statement announcing the newly constituted Interim National Committee of the National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN).

He said the decision to install new leadership in NCAN was both timely and necessary, following years of constitutional violations and leadership tussles that had weakened the association.

“NCAN is too important to Nigeria’s non-oil export economy to be left in crisis. We are trying to sanitize our agricultural institutions and ensure they contribute meaningfully to the economy without overdependence on oil revenue,” Yinusa stated.

He commended the unanimous appointment of Mr. Ademola Adesokan, an executive member of NCAN, as Interim National President, describing him as a credible leader with a proven track record in agribusiness.

Yinusa expressed confidence that the interim committee under Adesokan’s leadership would align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes food security, value addition, and agricultural transformation.

In line with government directives, all NCAN state chapters are expected to be reconstituted and conduct elections within one year.

He also acknowledged the roles of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) and the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment (FMITI) in developing the Cashew Policy Roadmap, describing NCAN as a key partner in its implementation.

“Under this interim leadership, we expect NCAN to operate transparently, democratically, and in full support of government policy. The Presidency stands firmly behind these reforms,” he added.
