The Nigeria National League (NNL) has given McCarthy Stadium in Makurdi a two-week deadline to upgrade its facilities ahead of the 2025/2026 football season.
McCarthy Stadium serves as the home ground of Lobi Stars, one of the teams competing in the NNL. The ultimatum follows an inspection of the stadium by league officials to assess its readiness for the upcoming season.
Speaking during the visit, NNL Chairman, Mr. George Aluo, commended the quality of the playing pitch but pointed out that other essential infrastructure needed for hosting league games was lacking.

“We’re here in Makurdi to assess the preparedness of the state to host the league opener. From what we saw on ground, the playing turf is in perfect condition, but the stadium lacks other facilities necessary to host such a high-profile event,” Aluo said.
The NNL has made it clear that necessary improvements must be completed within two weeks if the stadium is to host matches for the new season, which officially kicks off on Saturday, November 8.
