The President of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Festus Osifo, has clarified that the union’s decision to suspend its nationwide industrial action against Dangote Refinery was out of respect for the Nigerian government and citizens.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Osifo expressed dissatisfaction with the truce, noting that the agreement did not fully address the union’s main demand of reinstating the 800 sacked employees.

“Out of respect for government institutions, the National Security Adviser, DSS, the Chief Reconciliator of the Federation, and ministers who mediated tirelessly, we decided to suspend the action,” Osifo said, adding that the strike would resume immediately if Dangote fails to uphold its commitments.

PENGASSAN’s two-day strike, declared on Sunday, had disrupted gas and crude supply to the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery, affecting operations and the downstream oil sector. The Federal Government intervened through the Ministry of Labour and Employment, resulting in Dangote agreeing to reabsorb the dismissed workers.
