The Anambra State Government has announced plans to commence the construction of a new airport in Ndikelionwu, Orumba North Local Government Area, as part of its broader push to drive industrialisation and investment in the state.
During an inspection tour of the proposed site, the Managing Director of Chinua Achebe International Cargo Airport, Engr. Martins Emeka Nwafor, said the visit was aimed at identifying a suitable and “flyable” location for the facility, which will be developed alongside an industrial park under an aerotropolis model.
Nwafor, who also chairs the state’s Airport and Aerotropolis Committee, described the project as a potential game-changer, saying it would unlock new economic opportunities, boost industrialisation, and attract both local and foreign investors.
“This initiative will integrate aviation infrastructure with commercial, residential, and logistics hubs to create a thriving airport-driven city,” he explained. “Having multiple airports across Anambra will not only enhance connectivity but also accelerate the state’s overall development.”
Community leaders including Hon. Fabian Nwosu, former President-General of the Ndikelionwu Welfare Association, and Hon. Ifesinachi Chukwurah Onwurah, Vice President of the community, expressed gratitude to the government for siting the project in their locality. They pledged full cooperation, security support, and community engagement to ensure smooth execution.
The delegation to the site also included Prof. Charles O. Ofoegbu, MD/CEO of the Anambra State Solid Minerals Development Company Limited; Retired Air Vice Marshal Ben Chiobi, SSA to the Governor on Security; Mr. Chukwudi Ezenwa, architect and founder of Sliding Towers; as well as community chiefs and elders.
Geologists and geophysicists from the state’s Solid Minerals Development Company were also present to carry out geomapping and provide technical assessments of the site.
