The Chairman of Boki Local Government Council, Beatrice Etta Nyiam, has called on community leaders to take a proactive role in the fight against illicit drug use and trafficking, stressing that the responsibility must be shared by all.
Nyiam made the appeal during a peace-building dialogue with stakeholders of Buda Ward in Kachuan Irruan, where she praised the community’s record of peaceful coexistence despite boundary disputes in the area. She, however, warned that drug abuse poses a serious threat to such stability.
“I charge you as leaders to report anyone engaging in illicit drug abuse to the police or NDLEA. Offenders, irrespective of gender or age, must face the law,” she said.

The council boss assured stakeholders that her administration would deepen collaboration with communities in order to find sustainable solutions to the drug menace.
Also speaking at the forum, Vice Chairman Lawrence Akan condemned landlords who rent properties to drug dealers, describing their actions as enabling the crisis. Retired AIG and Governor’s Security Adviser, Mr. John Abang, urged residents to take ownership of guiding their youths while working hand-in-hand with security agencies.
Commander of the Buda Vigilante, Comd. Osang Abua Peter, raised concern over the rising rate of drug abuse in the ward, identifying it as the most pressing security challenge facing the community.
The meeting was attended by officials of the NDLEA, the Civil Defence Corps, traditional leaders, youth groups, and women leaders — all of whom pledged support for the council’s anti-drug campaign.
