A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Mahmud Usman, a commander of the proscribed Ansaru sect, to 15 years imprisonment.
Usman, also known as Abu Bara’a, Abbas, or Mukhtar, admitted guilt on Thursday to charges of illegal mining and channeling the proceeds into the purchase of arms used for terrorism and kidnapping activities.
Presiding judge Justice Emeka Nwite ordered that he remain in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) while facing trial on 31 additional terrorism-related charges.

Usman, who described himself as the “Emir of Ansaru,” was arraigned alongside his deputy and chief of staff, Mahmud al-Nigeri (aka Malam Mamuda).
The duo are jointly facing a 32-count charge involving leadership of a terrorist group, terrorism financing, recruitment of fighters, and coordinating violent attacks across Nigeria.
Ansaru militants have been linked to several high-profile incidents, including the July 2022 attack on Kuje prison in Abuja, where more than 600 inmates — among them 64 Boko Haram suspects — escaped.
