No coalition strong enough to unseat Tinubu – Okechukwu

A founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osita Okechukwu, has dismissed claims by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that a “national consensus” could unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Speaking in Enugu on Sunday during a briefing with members of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Okechukwu said the former CPC bloc has resolved to back Tinubu in the next presidential election, pledging to deliver a significant portion of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari’s famed 12 million northern vote bank.

Reacting to ADC’s claims of a united opposition, Okechukwu argued that the only genuine national consensus since 1999 has been the rotation of power between North and South for fairness and stability.

“The truth is that Nigerians, whether partisan or not, agreed on power rotation between regions as the foundation of the 4th Republic. That convention remains a milestone for equity, justice, and national unity,” he stated.

Okechukwu further criticized opposition figures who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ADC, branding them “Internally Displaced Politicians (IDPs).” According to him, these politicians destabilized their former party and are now desperate to seize power at all costs.

“Instead of respecting the rotation principle, these IDPs blame Tinubu for problems of their own making. Did Tinubu tell them to breach the PDP constitution in 2023? Did he force them to abandon zoning? Now they are chasing shadows while undermining the very convention that holds Nigeria together,” he remarked.

He urged ADC leaders to accept that maintaining the rotation model serves the collective interest of Nigerians, stressing that abandoning it would only deepen divisions.

On the 2027 race, Okechukwu was confident that Tinubu would command massive northern support, insisting that the region’s electorate cannot be manipulated.

“ADC imagines that the northern electorate are sitting in a dormitory waiting to be picked at will. That’s a mirage. They are some of the most sophisticated voters in Nigeria, and Tinubu will draw strength from that sophistication and Buhari’s enduring political base,” he concluded.
