Human rights lawyer, Maduabuchi Idam, has urged Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru to urgently address renewed violence in Amasiri community.
In an open letter to the governor dated August 29, 2025, Idam appealed for immediate intervention to restore peace and prevent further escalation of the crisis.
His call comes in response to reports of an Ebonyi indigene trekking from Lagos to Abakaliki to thank the governor for restoring peace in Effium community.
In the letter titled “Renewed Attacks, Tension, and Hostility in Amasiri,” Idam questioned why the peace model applied in Effium has not been replicated in Amasiri, where clashes over land disputes have continued to claim lives.
He argued that if the “Thank You Trek” was genuine and not a political stunt, the governor should show equal commitment to communities like Amasiri, which remain trapped in insecurity.

The lawyer also accused the governor of sidelining the community due to its voting pattern in the last election, warning that such neglect was costing innocent lives.
“If a trek is all it takes to get His Excellency’s attention, then once peace is restored in Amasiri, not only will people march to Government House in gratitude, but praise songs will also echo across radio stations in Nigeria,” Idam wrote.
He urged Governor Nwifuru to put politics aside and urgently deploy the Effium peace template to restore calm in Amasiri, where residents now live in fear and uncertainty.
