$3 Billion Rail Project in Southeast Will Boost Economy, Create Jobs — APC Chieftain Arodiogbu
Dr. Ijeomah Arodiogbu, the National Vice Chairman (Southeast) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has hailed the Federal Government’s approval of a $3 billion investment for the construction of railway lines across the Southeast, calling it a game-changer for the region.
Speaking to journalists in Owerri, Arodiogbu described the proposed railway development as the most significant federal infrastructure initiative the Southeast has ever witnessed. He emphasized that, beyond enhancing transportation, the project would stimulate economic growth, increase trade, and foster regional integration.
According to him, the railway network is expected to generate approximately 200,000 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase. He also noted that it would enhance commercial activity by connecting key cities and potentially unlock up to ₦50 billion in trade annually.
Expressing optimism, Arodiogbu said the initiative would not only improve mobility but also deepen social and economic ties within the region once fully implemented.

Speaking with journalists in Owerri, Arodiogbu referred to the proposed railway development as the most extensive federal infrastructure initiative the Southeast has ever received. He noted that the project is poised to revolutionize transportation, enhance intercity connectivity, and significantly drive commercial growth.
According to him, the construction phase alone is expected to generate around 200,000 direct and indirect jobs. He further projected that improved transport links would unlock up to ₦50 billion in annual trade, stimulate local economies, and boost regional integration.
The planned railway will span over 1,400 kilometers, beginning in Port Harcourt and cutting through major cities such as Aba, Enugu, Makurdi, Jos, Bauchi, and Gombe before reaching its final stop in Maiduguri.
Arodiogbu praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for including the Southeast in the federal infrastructure agenda, saying the move signals a renewed commitment to equitable national development. He also credited Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma for playing a vital role in securing the project for the region.
