In a press release issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the suspects—including the alleged mastermind, Shamsu Yusuf, known by the alias “Chitta”—were captured following a coordinated sting operation carried out by the Special Intervention Squad (SIS), led by Chief Superintendent Rabiu Gidado.
The incident took place on July 7, when a local car dealer, Abdulqadir Abdurrahman from Gadan Kaya Quarters, reported to authorities that an individual had visited Dangari Motors pretending to be a potential buyer and drove off with a gold 2013 Toyota Corolla during a test drive.
Investigators swiftly launched a manhunt and successfully tracked down Yusuf along with two associates: 40-year-old Bashir Ladan of Shagari Quarters, Katsina, and 41-year-old Suleiman Muntari from Tudun Matawalle, also in Katsina. Authorities also recovered the stolen vehicle, which had already been smuggled and sold in the Niger Republic.
According to the police, Yusuf admitted to being involved in multiple car thefts, including the recent stealing of a GLK Mercedes-Benz. The investigation remains ongoing.
Commissioner of Police, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, urged car dealers to be cautious when dealing with unfamiliar buyers and encouraged the public to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement without delay.
