FG Officially Pegs Minimum Admission Age at 16

The Federal Government has officially established 16 years as the minimum age requirement for entry into Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

This directive was announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, on Tuesday during the 2025 Policy Meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) held in Abuja.

Declaring the meeting open, Dr. Alausa stressed that the new age limit is now a mandatory national policy and cannot be waived. He also issued a stern warning that any admissions conducted outside the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) will be deemed invalid.

The minister cautioned that heads of institutions involved in admission malpractice or who bypass the CAPS protocol will face legal consequences.

The annual policy meeting sets the ground rules for student admissions into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education for the upcoming academic year.
