At least 21 people were killed in a fatal road crash along the Zaria–Kano highway on Sunday morning.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident, which occurred around 8:23 a.m. at Kasuwar Dogo in the Dakatsalle area. The crash involved a DAF trailer, bearing registration number GWL 422 ZE, and a Toyota Hummer bus with registration number KMC 171 YM.

The Kano State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) stated that preliminary investigations revealed the Hummer bus driver had violated traffic regulations by driving against the flow of traffic, leading to a fatal head-on collision with the oncoming trailer.

The impact of the crash sparked a fire that engulfed both vehicles, with most of the victims burned beyond recognition.

Kano State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), M.B. Bature, said the corps’ rescue team swiftly responded to the distress call by alerting both the Federal and State Fire Services to contain the blaze, while also deploying personnel to the scene for rescue and evacuation efforts.

The Sector Public Education Officer, CRC Abdullahi Labaran, confirmed that 24 individuals were involved in the crash, with 21 fatalities and three others sustaining varying degrees of injuries.

The charred remains of the deceased were transported to the Nassarawa Hospital Mortuary in Kano, while the injured victims are currently receiving treatment at Garun Malam General Hospital.

In the aftermath, FRSC personnel, supported by a tow truck unit (Rs1.2 Kano) and officers of the Nigeria Police Force, worked diligently to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow along the busy Zaria–Kano highway.

Sector Commander M.B. Bature expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident, extending condolences to the bereaved families and wishing the injured a speedy recovery. He also cautioned motorists against route violations, dangerous overtaking, and night travel—factors frequently linked to fatal road crashes.

“This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the critical importance of adhering to traffic regulations,” said Sector Commander M.B. Bature. “Most road crashes are entirely preventable if motorists observe basic safety protocols.”

He appealed to commercial drivers to steer clear of over-speeding and reckless driving, noting that such behaviors are major contributors to high-fatality accidents nationwide.
