60-Year-Old Church Usher Killed in Edo Fire

A 60-year-old man, Etebet Oyemara, has tragically lost his life in a fire outbreak in Benin City, Edo State.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday night at No. 14 Benson Street, off Okhoro Road, claimed Oyemara’s life as he reportedly tried to salvage belongings from the burning building.

Oyemara, who was an usher and head of the electrical unit at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Okhoro, was trapped inside alongside his wife and other occupants. His wife sustained severe burns and is currently receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, Moses Yamu, who said investigations have commenced to establish the cause of the fire.

Eyewitnesses said firefighters from the Edo State Fire Service, assisted by staff of Guinness Nigeria Plc, prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby houses.

Meanwhile, a Mass was held on Monday in Oyemara’s memory, while plans are underway to transport his remains to his hometown in eastern Nigeria. Survivors and residents of the affected building have appealed for support from the state government and well-meaning individuals.
