The Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA) has called for stronger voter education campaigns to curb misinformation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
At an event in Kwara State, PAACA’s Executive Director, Ezenwa Nwagwu, expressed concern over what he described as the widespread lack of understanding among Nigerians about the legal framework governing elections. He warned that this knowledge gap has been a major driver of misinformation around the country’s electoral process.
“Lack of understanding of the legal regime with which elections are conducted has been responsible for some of the falsehood and misinformation around electoral processes,” Nwagwu noted.
“It has been humbling to see the level of ignorance, and we are happy to use this platform to educate stakeholders and bridge that gap.”
He explained that much of the false information circulating about elections stems from poor awareness of the laws and procedures guiding Nigeria’s polls. To address this, Nwagwu said PAACA will continue to engage stakeholders through town halls and similar forums aimed at deepening civic knowledge and strengthening public participation in democracy.

Also speaking at the event, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kwara, Dr. Hale Gabriel Longpet, described the call for comprehensive voter education as timely.
“Together, we can work towards promoting voter education, ensuring adherence to relevant rules and regulations, preventing electoral malpractices, providing essential services, and enhancing the overall electoral process,” Longpet said.
This advocacy comes just days after INEC announced progress in its ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, recording 4.44 million online registrations and 509,929 physical registrations nationwide.
