12 Feared Dead in Jigawa Canoe Tragedy

At least four people have lost their lives in a tragic canoe accident in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred when a canoe transporting 17 passengers from Digawa Village in Jahun LGA to Zangon Maje in Taura LGA overturned mid-journey.

The source reported that four victims were confirmed dead, seven individuals were rescued, while five others remain unaccounted for as search efforts continue.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Jigawa State has confirmed a fatal boat accident that occurred in Zangon Maje, Taura Local Government Area, claiming multiple lives.

In an official statement released to journalists, NSCDC spokesperson Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud described the incident as a devastating tragedy. “The Jigawa State Command regrets to report a fatal boat mishap that took place on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at around 5:00 p.m. in Zangon Maje, Taura LGA,” the statement read.

Mahmud explained that the ill-fated canoe was carrying 17 passengers—primarily young girls between the ages of 10 and 13—from Digawa Village in Jahun LGA to Zangon Maje when it capsized midway through the journey.

Preliminary findings confirmed that seven passengers were rescued alive, four bodies had been recovered, and five individuals remained missing at the time of the report.

Search and rescue efforts are still ongoing, led by NSCDC personnel in collaboration with local divers and community volunteers, as authorities work to locate the remaining victims.

While the exact cause of the accident is still unknown, investigations have been launched to uncover what led to the tragedy.

The State Commandant of NSCDC, Bala Bawa Bodinga, extended his heartfelt condolences to the families affected and the communities of Digawa and Zangon Maje. He also praised the prompt response of rescue teams and volunteers engaged in the recovery efforts.
